When you’re starting a new copywriting business, there’s nothing more exciting than getting that first call or email from a copywriting prospect.

I can still remember when I first started out.

For a long time, I was concerned I’d never get that first copywriting contract.

What if they never called me? How would I ever get started and make any money?

And then, there was the flip side of the coin.

What if they did call me about writing for them? Was I really prepared to work with a client?

Well, that first client did finally call me, and I was prepared to work with them.

Honestly, I was scared to death when I discussed the project with him. But everything went well, and I was off and running in my new copywriting career.

You know, I still get the jitters from time to time. And when a new prospect calls me, the butterflies still fly around in my stomach.

At least now they’re flying in formation!

In this article, we’re going to discuss some of the ways I’ve handled the replies to copywriting prospect requests. Not every response is the same. I try to tailor it to the information I receive from the prospective client’s first contact.

I’ve had several requests over the last few weeks and I’m going to explain how I handled each one of them. And I’ll also go back to some of my more memorable previous contacts and explain what I did.

By the time you’re done reading this, it’s my hope that you’ll have at least a few ideas to calm your nerves when a prospect comes calling.

But we’ll start with a few tips on getting yourself prepared, armed with the tools you’ll need to look and sound like a professional.
