Here’s a simple question:
When your phone rings, do you answer it?
The reason I ask is this: I’ve read several discussions where famous copywriters talk about how they don’t allow distractions while they’re working. Distractions like phone, email, sometimes even family. Anything that disturbs their writing flow is to be avoided.
I always liked that advice, mainly because I don’t really like answering the phone. So it became a “convenient excuse” not to answer it. Besides, 90% of the calls are just telemarketers anyway, right?
The other reason not to answer the phone — and I thought this was a good one — was so you weren’t caught unprepared. Let them leave a message, do a little research, and call them back on your own terms. It’ll even make you sound smarter and more professional.
If you’re new to this game, and don’t feel really confident about your ability to sell yourself on the phone, that sounds like great advice, too.
Only it hasn’t helped me one bit.
