There was a time when all you really had to do to optimize a page for search was target the right keyword, then feature it as often as possible in your copy. Those were dark days. Poorly-written websites dominated the search engine results page, and spammers reigned supreme over all corners of the Web.

Alright, maybe it wasn’t quite that bad. But over-focus on keywords did drive down the overall value of what people were able to find through search engines. That’s why Google has, particularly in recent years, taken multiple steps to penalize keyword stuffing (among other black hat practices).
